Ramon Sampedro was a Spanish fisherman and writer who became quadriplegic at the age of 25 after diving into shallow waters that damaged his spinal cord. Sampedro became a prominent name in the debate surrounding the right to euthanasia in Spain. Sampedro was an intense supporter of the euthanasia movement, and he composed “Cartas desde el infierno” (Letters from Hell), a book that was not originally meant to be distributed but instead to serve as a personal diary. At age 54, after 29 years of paralysis, Sampedro died after drinking a cup of sodium pentobarbital that was provided by a group of associates. His story was later portrayed in the Oscar-winning film "The Sea Inside" in 2004.
